It’s important to us that the needs of researchers using museum collections data, and the museums providing data and using the Museum Data Service infrastructure all feed into our work on the MDS. We’re really excited to bring these new user groups together and have already had a productive first meeting with them.

In this post, we’re introducing our Research User Group, made up of researchers from a range of different disciplines, all either using, or interested in using MDS data. We’ve introduced our museums user group in another post.

Researcher user group members

Top left to bottom right: Jin Gao, UCL; Florian Siemund, University of Cologne; Liam Thorne, University of Sheffield; Emily Middleton, University of Leeds;
Maribel Hidalgo-Urbaneja, Kings College London; Emilia Sharples, Art Fund; Richard Nevell, Wikimedia UK; John Moore, The National Archives; Marco Humbel, The National Archives.

The group has some great expertise and insights to help us support researchers using collections data. There is a strong digital humanities contingent, including expertise in 19th century literature and culture, as well as histories of computation. The group also has a lot of knowledge around digital methods; including postcolonial and feminist-centric data methods, ethical data stewardship and approaches to data quality assessment and cleaning. Finally, the user group also has a strong grounding in data infrastructures and open data, both as users and managers of them.

If you have been using MDS data for a project, we’d love to hear from you.
