- Brief description:
- large round lantern or oil lamp, about 7 inches in diameter and standing 12.5 inches high. The base and top of the lantern are round but the central glass chimney is square, protected by an outer circle of stout wires. The carrying handle is metal with wood, and a hinged flap at the top of the lamp bears the words HINKS/1918/BIRMINGHAM. One of the glass sides is hinged and opens outwards so that the square oil tank can be slid out of the lantern for filling, or for the 0.75 inch wide wick, in a brass holder, to be trimmed. There is also a hollow metal tube attached to one side of the top of the tank, possibly for holding a candle

- small rectangular pocket brass tobacco tin with three hinged lids, engraved with the name of John Gargrave of Hinton, Swaledale, 1852. The compartment covered by the engraved lid is the largest and still holds shreds of tobacco. A smaller lid on the underside of the box covers a small compartment which possibly held matches, and at the opposite end of the box there is another lid providing access to a small area which is sealed off from the other two compartments and has a small internal hole at the base. This possibly held a pipe, the stem of the pipe sliding into the hole and the bowl of the pipe filling the compartment. The box measures 5.5 by 1.75 by 1 inches or 14 by 4.6 by 2.5 cm

The fleam would be used to open a vein in the cow's or horse's neck, knocked in using a small wooden mallet or mell, for veterinary practice. The closed fleam, made by Gregory, fitted into a pseudo-leather cardboard container.

- half-barrel shaped wooden cheese mould, possibly made of oak, known as a Chesford mould. Made by a cooper and consisting of a stout wooden barrel held together by three metal bands, and with a perforated base and sides. The barrel is 8 inches or 20 cm high and has an internal diameter of 8 inches or 20 cm. Used by James Alderson, Stone House, Upper Swaledale.

The stand stood in front of the fire and consists of a triangular frame with crossbars to support the oatcake. A movable leg, rotating about a wooden peg at the top of the frame, enabled the angle of rest of the frame to be altered

- hay spade, used by Henry Isherwood to cut hay in the barn for fodder. The spade has a large triangular head and a short metal shaft, partially curved, into which a stout wooden handle is fitted. The handle has been riddled with woodworm and the upper part of it is missing, revealing the rotten state of the wood. The blade is stamped '2' and 'SIDNEY CARTER'.
