- The setting for The Breakfast Table is Charleston, the home of the painter Vanessa Bell. For a time Fry and Bell were lovers but by 1918, the date of this painting, the relationship had ended although they remained close friends. Both were leading lights of what is now known as the Bloomsbury Group, a collection of artists, writers and critics that took their name from the Bloomsbury district in London. According to sources the picture was painted at Charleston during the Christmas of 1918. Fry's two children, Pamela and Julian, are having breakfast.

- One of a set of six colour lithographs with blank verse poems by the artist created to commemmorate the return of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. The volumes were manufactured by Bomberg (who had learnt lithography whilst apprenticed to the lithographer Paul Fischer in c.1906) and bound into their wrappers by his wife, in an edition of about 100 copies.
The loose-leaved booklet was not issued officially although Bomberg attempted to sell copies in the theatre at 2/6- each. Diagalev immediately put a stop to the sale. The bulk of the edition was then acquired by the Vorticist bookshop and publisher Henderson's Bomb Shop. About ten were sold and then Henderson withdrew them as unsaleable. After being withdrawn from Henderson's Bomb Shop, the remaining stock was bought by art dealer Jacob Mendelson, who had helped finance the project in the first place, with a £30 investment. These remainders stayed in storage until the 1960s, when interest in Bomberg began to be rekindled. No sooner had Mendelson started to sell off the copies which had been in storage for 40 years, than most of the remaining books were destroyed in a fire. They are consequently very rare.

- Text:
- Christopher Wood's association with St Ives began in 1926 when he visited Cornwall for the first time with his friends Ben and Winifred Nicholson. There Wood experienced a simple, uncluttered lifestyle quite unlike that of his years spent in Paris, where he had been surrounded by the intelligentsia of the day, including Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau.
Christopher Wood was especially enchanted by Cornwall. Letters to his mother (whose family were Cornish) reveal Wood's delight in the countryside and its people;
"the coastland is arid with huge rocks and towering black cliffs, and little coves and creeks with the greenest water you ever saw, with little white cottages clinging like wild flowers to the rocks". For Wood, seeking as he was simplicity and even primitivism, the enduring qualities of this unchanging landscape were enthralling.
Wood returned to St Ives in September 1928 and encountered there a retired seaman turned painter, Alfred Wallis. Inspired by Wallis' work Wood approached the seascapes and town views of the Cornish coastline with fresh eyes, adopting a deliberately naïve approach.
Of the Cornish fishermen Wood wrote;
"they look like pirates with big jack boots up to their thighs and skin hats with wings to them like Mercury". There is certainly a whimsical feeling to the lolling men, who seem still to be finding their land legs and roll like the toy-like boats on the choppy waves. They appear somewhat comical in their odd hats, and give the scene a gaiety and festive feel.

- Text:
- Both the paintings and the memorabilia objects came to Aberdeen Art Gallery from a Miss Lizzie Hogarth in 1939. She was a granddaughter of a William Hogarth, granite merchant of Aberdeen, who restored the painter's tomb in 1856. There is no family relationship between the two men but it seems probable that the granite merchant was prompted to acquire these artefacts by pride in his possession of the famous painter's name.

- Text:
- This phase of Scott's work came to an end partly as a result of a visit in 1953 to the USA, where he met Pollock, Rothko and Kline. He felt that he belonged to the European tradition of Chardin, Cézanne and Bonnard, and this led to a gradual return to a more representational style. Gradually, however, he moved again towards abstraction.
In the late 1960s he reintroduced objects such as frying pans and saucepans juxtaposed with purely abstract forms; the picture space was kept deliberately flat and the forms carefully spaced in floating rows. In both paintings and prints he sometimes produced variations of almost identical arrangements of forms in completely different colours, continuing to use still-life subjects as the starting-point for otherwise self-sufficient formal relationships.

- Text:
- Influenced by the Dutch and Flemish masters of the 17th century, John Cranch worked principally as a genre painter in the manner of David Wilkie. He was a friend of the young John Constable and in 1796 he made a list of books for Constable to read, warning him that Sir Joshua Reynold's 'Discourses', could bias the young artist against 'familiar nature'.
Cranch specialized in rural genre scenes of peasant life, often set in interiors - but in this delicately painted view of the Shannon he embraces landscape, with just two figures of gentrified huntsmen climbing the red brick wall in the foreground.

- Text:
- With a combination of pen, ink and wash Emanuel A. Peterson's depicts a seascape in Greenland, with its isolated, shapely icebergs protruding from the ocean and arranged neatly along the picture plain. There is an eerie calm to the work as the horizon falls almost in the centre of the paper and both the sea and sky remain flat and unthreatening. The study is dedicated to Peterson's friend, fellow artist Arthur Chrystal (1904-1978), as the inscription reveals, 'To Arthur Chrystal, with best wishes from Emanuel A. Peterson, June 1934'.

Hogarth - about the year 1744 Mr Hogarth painted a portrait of himself and wife - he afterwards cut the canvas through, and presented the half containing his own portrait to a gentleman in Yorkshire. -
If any of your numerous readers are in possession of any portrait of Mr Hogarth about 3 feet in length and 20 inches wide, or are aware, of the existence of such a portrait, they will confer a favour by addressing a line to J. Phillips, 5 Torrington Place, London.
