Object name(s):
WWII Helmet
Brief description:
Metal helmet in khaki green used during the Second World War. It has the letters ‘AFS’ painted on the front in white which stands for Auxiliary Fire Service. It would have most likely been worn by a local volunteer helping to put out fires caused by incendiary bombs. The AFS was formed during the war as a result of the Air Raid Precautions Act 1937. This placed a responsibility on Local Authorities to host and manage an emergency fire service. By September 1939 the AFS had over 200,000 members, supporting the country’s regular firefighters in the battle against German air-raids.
