Our Museum Data Manager, Dr Arran Rees, will be the guest speaker at the Cardiff leg of a five-event series of workshops to promote the Towards Digital Collections training materials commissioned by the AHRC research programme Towards a National Collection (TaNC).
Between January to March 2025, the team responsible for developing the training materials will be running a series of events and workshops across the United Kingdom to promote the course and seek feedback, which will be used to make improvements as required.
Each workshop will feature a guest speaker. In Cardiff, Arran will explain how MDS works – both for museums wanting to join and for researchers wanting to access and use the data.
As Museum Data Manager for MDS, Arran’s work involves helping museums join the service and facilitating access to the collections data. Before working on MDS, he completed a PhD in digital collecting in museums and worked on the Congruence Engine TaNC project as well as in museums like the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Museum of Cardiff.

Getting ready for MDS
A great strength of MDS is that there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. Each museum will have its own reasons for signing up and these will influence how much data is shared and on what terms. This session is for those who want to explore the data-sharing options offered by MDS and see how the process works.
