Collection overview (Collection development policy)
The Society owns a wide collection of artefacts and literature ranging from diving-related toys to diving bells, and from diving company catalogues to scientific publications on diving research. They cover all aspects of diving: sport, scientific, commercial, archaeological, naval, entertainment, and diving history.
A major part of the John Bevan Collection, which was previously on display in the Shipwreck and Heritage Centre at Charlestown, in Cornwall, was loaned to us in order to establish The Diving Museum. This included most of the outside exhibits, such as diving bells, a 1930s atmospheric diving suit, a two-man swimmer delivery vehicle designed for the Royal Navy, and two compression chambers which were from the Royal Naval Physiological Laboratory. John’s collection has since been formally donated to The Diving Museum. The RN Diving Branch loaned several types of underwater breathing apparatus, and the National Museum of the Royal Navy loaned a selection of important historical items and artwork originally from the Siebe Gorman Diving Museum. They also loaned us and then passed to our collection a JIM atmospheric diving suit and a wooden scale model of Argonaut Junior, a 3-wheeled seabed vehicle originally made in 1894 in America, which incorporated an airlock. Many diving-related organisations, members of the Historical Diving Society and other individuals have donated or loaned a wide variety of diving equipment and accessories, in particular, the late Bob Campbell’s important collection of SCUBA regulators has been donated to The Diving Museum. Other important donations include a 3-metre scale model of the wreck of HMS Edinburgh made for the film Gold from the Deep donated by Rick Wharton; another atmospheric diving suit, a Newt Suit, and a fully equipped saturation diver and bellman were donated by Subsea 7; and QinetiQ have donated a large quantity of diving equipment that had been used for evaluation purposes over many years. Military medals and ephemera relating to Lt. W. Bailey, Cdr. L. Crabb and Stoker Sydney Knowles, famous divers from WW2, have been loaned by their respective families and, in the case of Cdr. Crabb’s medal, by the National Museum of the Royal Navy.
A large number of books have been donated and The Historical Diving Society now has an extensive reference and research library of some 5000 books, documents and photographs. Our archives include Royal Naval diver training records going back to 1921, several personal divers’ logs, commercial diving equipment catalogues and scientific publications on diving research. We also have about 500 films and videos, and about 2500 items of diving apparatus and related items.
We use a database for cataloguing, managing, and tracking all objects, in which every object is given a unique number. Each entry includes a 1-line description and if necessary additional notes which can be considerably longer, as well as other details of the item and of its acquisition. In January 2023 the total number of items recorded exceeded 9000.
All our paper and film artefacts are kept in our concrete storeroom familiarly known as The Bunker, a Second World War Air Raid Precaution Centre now owned by the HDS, which has a suitable and stable environment. It is located about a mile from The Diving Museum.

Collection overview (Cornucopia)
Science and Industry Collection
The history and ongoing development of the Barrow shipyard features heavily in this collection and particularly the long associated firm of Vickers. Collections represent the wide range of work carried out by the Yard from shipbuilding to general engineering. In addition to a number of items of machinery, there is a collection of ship models dating from 1873 (first launch date from the shipyard) to the 1950s. The town has been associated with submarine building since 1901 and this theme is a particular focus for future collecting. The other key industries that influenced the growth and development of the town in the 19th century, iron mining and iron and steel production, are also featured. The history of iron mining ranges from that carried out by the Cistercian Monks at Furness Abbey to the boom in the late 19th century and decline around the 1960s. Steel production began in the area around 1700 and again a small but developing collection traces its history and the lives of the steelworkers and key personalities of the industry. The various other local industries of the 19th-20th centuries also feature in the collections including the Jute Works and shipbreaking depot.

Collection overview (Cornucopia)
Archaeology Collection
This collection reflects the rich archaeological heritage of Dorset. Important collections presented to the museum include those of: Cunnington (1880s); Moule (1880-1900); Warne (1880); and Hall and Bean (1982). The prehistoric and Roman collections are particularly strong. The archaeology of the iron age hillfort of Maiden Castle, excavated primarily by Sir Mortimer Wheeler, is a strength of the museum. There are finds from many major excavations in Dorchester and rural Dorset, such as the evidence for the neolithic henge monument at Maumbury Rings, subsequently a Roman amphitheatre (and latterly a 17th century gun emplacement); artefacts from the huge late neolithic palisade enclosure which underlies Dorchester; finds from prehistoric excavations elsewhere in the county; finds from the Roman town of Durnovaria, which underlies modern Dorchester, and the many Dorset rural Roman settlements and villas; Saxon finds from cemeteries such as Poundbury; and medieval material from the county. In addition, there is a fine range of artefacts discovered as stray finds, especially perhaps bronze age metalwork. There are complete Roman mosaic pavements lifted from town houses excavated in Dorchester and from Dewlish Roman villa.

Collection overview (Cornucopia)
Social History
This is the largest single part of the collection, totalling 7000 items. Under this general heading is included all artefacts made or used within the Dover District including locally made watches and ceramics, local tools, agriculture, ephemera, personalia, oral history, music and medicine. There are models and replicas, including a wonderful set of scale models showing the development of the town and port of Dover from the Roman times up to 1990; the Victorian rebuilding of the town. Other outstanding collections include Ronald Stocks Loan collection of Weights & Measures. Certain areas are particularly strong e.g. Regulations and Control (includes Local Authority material such as seals, badges, and material from local Fire and Police Services, Customs and Excise etc.).
Fine Art
The Museum holds a large and particularly good collection of oil paintings, prints, drawings, watercolours and photographs of Dover numbering approximately 1,000 framed items and approximately 20,000 unframed items. The Museum also holds a very small collection of pictures that do not depict local scenes.
Archaeology
Dover Museum has a collection of around 4000 objects and around 15000 bulk archaeological samples. The collection is particularly strong in relation to the Bronze Age. Loans include Anglo-Saxon finds from the Buckland Cemetery excavation (on loan from the British Museum) and the Dover Bronze Age Boat, the world’s oldest known seagoing boat, on loan from the Dover Bronze Age Boat Trust.
Ancient Egyptian Collection
Some 26 ancient Egyptian objects appear in the old accession registers, but an unclear part thereof was lost through decay and shelling in 1942-3; at least three items survive, and more may be waiting to be traced. Therefore, any information presented here about the collection must be viewed as preliminary. Although the archaeology collection is currently being reorganized, as Dover Museum is a local history museum, none of the objects is on display and access is therefore problematic. Classes of objects represented in the collection include: jewellery; metal figure; animal remains (mummies); human remains (mummies, fragmentary); papyrus; pottery; relief sculpture; shabtis; textile; wooden figure.
Subjects
Ancient civilizations; Antiquity; Egyptology
Transport
The museum holds around 200 transport-related items.
Arms and Armour
Dover has a long and important military history, which is not well reflected in its collections. A few excellent pieces of uniform, and important material from the First World War Zeebrugge Raid conducted by the Dover Patrol, together with a number of military prints and a large collection of plans of the construction of the Western Heights Defences are the most significant items.
Archives
The local ephemera collection is an outstanding collection area, totalling 10,000 items.
Photographic
One of the most significant parts of the collection are the local photographs, totalling over 44,000 images.
Science and Industry
Particularly strong areas include some manufacturing industries e.g. food, drink, tobacco goods and engineering.
Ethnography
Dover Museum has a small collection of approximately 200 items of Chinese and Japanese Ceramics, furniture, costume and sculpture; some pieces are of outstanding quality. There is also a very small and unimpressive and poorly documented collection of ethnographic material numbering less than 100 items.
Numismatics
Dover Museum has a small but good collection of coins and medals spanning the Iron Age to Modern period, consisting of about 3000 items. The major gap in the collection is local tokens. The Museum also possesses 2 large 13th Century silver penny hoards.
Costume/textiles
The Museum has a very small collection of costume. It does, however, have a good collection of 19th Century local samplers. <
Maritime
The museum holds material relating to the history of the Cinque Ports and Lords Warden of the Cinque Ports within the collecting area and material relating to local Customs and Excise smuggling.
Biology
Up until the destruction of large parts of the Museum Collection in 1942, the Museum had a large and varied collection of zoological specimens including many fine examples presented by Lord Rothschild. With the exception of The Sloper Collection, a cased collection of c.2000 European Butterflies and Moths, a Polar Bear, and the cased head of a lion, very little else remains.
Geology
The Geological Collections was once large, but much was destroyed during the war. The present collection of 1825 items, most of which were formed by the Walton Collection, include many non-local fossils, probably British. Must of the material is only of moderate quality and very poorly documented.
Decorative/applied Art
After the War the Museum received a generous donation of furniture and paintings from the Lady Cory Bequest. There are approximately 300 pieces of furniture in the collection, mainly of nineteenth century date and including many pieces with Berlin Wood Work panels and seats. In addition, there are a number of earlier seventeenth and eighteenth century pieces. The Museum also has a small collection of over 1000 Ceramics, but many are of excellent quality and include many 18th Century pieces.

Collection history (Collection development policy)
Down County Museum’s collection was created in 1981 and consists mainly of objects donated by members of the public. These include items relating to the social, cultural, political, and economic history of County Down such as archaeological, geological, ecclesiastical, numismatic, and natural history collections as well as documents, photographs, agricultural items, fine and applied art and objects relating to the history of the Old County Gaol of Down, in which the museum is situated.
This collection, obtained largely by public donation between 1981-2000 forms the basis of the permanent exhibitions in the Governor’s Residence and the Cell Block extension.
The construction of the Cell Block Extension in 2015 facilitated the reorganisation of the collection’s storage, providing an additional onsite collections store that is currently used for large industrial and agricultural items.

History
Some Accredited museums (or multi-site services covering a number of museums) have shared with MDS a brief history of the collections in their care. These collection histories mostly come from the museums’ collection development policies, though they are no longer a mandatory section of the policies required by the Museum Accreditation Scheme.
Collection Overview
Accredited museums (or multi-site services covering a number of museums) are required to have a collection development policy that includes a brief overview of the scope and strengths of the collections in their care. Collection overviews are an incredibly useful starting point for anyone who wants to navigate the nation’s museum holdings, and we are very grateful to all those museums that have shared their overviews with MDS. In some cases, we have included overviews from a legacy dataset called ‘Cornucopia’.
CloseObject records in MDS
This figure is the number of datasets currently in MDS, rather than the number of museums. This is because some datasets come from multi-site services. For example, Norfolk Museum Service has contributed a single dataset, but this includes records about items held in the service’s eleven branch museums. On our Object search landing page, you can see the number of Accredited museums represented in these datasets.
CloseMuseum/collection status
Accredited Museum
These museums meet the nationally-agreed standards of the UK Museum Accreditation Scheme run by Arts Council England, Museums Galleries Scotland, NI Museums Council and the Welsh Government. In the case of multi-site services, the individual branch museums are Accredited, but the overarching service is usually not. Eg Yorkshire Museums Trust is responsible for three Accredited museums, but is not itself Accredited.
Designated Collection
The Designation Scheme, run by Arts Council England, recognises cultural collections of outstanding importance held in non-national museums, libraries and archives across England. There are over 160 Designated collections, but only the museum ones are included in our database here.
Recognised Collection
The Museums Galleries Scotland Recognition Scheme includes more than fifty Recognised Collections of National Significance, some spread across more than one museum. Here we count the number of museums containing parts of those collections, which is why the figure displayed here is higher than that quoted on the MGS website. There is currently no equivalent scheme for Wales or Northern Ireland.
