Archaeology Collection
Around 1200 items were bequeathed by B W J Kent in 1969, including an Egyptian mummy case of 26th dynasty, a collection of glass vessels from the Roman empire and 100 ceramic vessels from ancient Greece. Kent Collection has pottery vessels from South America, ancient Cypriot pottery and Egyptian antiquities – ushabti figures, amulets, stone vessels, wooden sculptures and jewellery. J R Ogden Collection includes a range of Egyptian antiquities, and a small collection of material associated with the history of writing – baked clay tablets from Mesopotamia with cuneiform script, samples of Egyptian hieroglyphs and some Roman material. British archaeology is well represented with collections of prehistoric material including stone tools, metal implements and pottery vessels, Roman, Anglo-Saxon and medieval periods, particularly with local material from the 500 square miles of the Harrogate District. Recent acquisitions include a rare Iron Age dagger, a medieval finger ring, pottery sherds from a previously unknown medieval kiln, and a hoard of silver coins dating from the Civil War.

Collection history (Collection development policy)
The museum collections span the 13th century to the present. The collection relates most strongly to York, North Yorkshire and the United Kingdom, although there are artefacts from Europe, the Baltic, Iceland and Russia. The historical context of the collections is that they have been acquired by purchase of the working apparatus of the Company, or by way of gift or legacy from Company Members and others. The collections help to illustrate life (social, business, charitable and religious) of a guild since its foundation in the fourteenth century.

Collection overview (Collection development policy)
The collection seeks to interpret and inform visitors about the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall and its role in the history of York, to identify key figures involved in the Company’s history, to highlight the significant work of Guilds and to emphasise the importance of overseas trade to the Company in the 15th and 16th Centuries. The collections feature the building itself, a medieval guildhall constructed from 1357 (built on the foundations of a Norman Manor House) along with two collections of silver (one of which is a nationally significant collection of York Hall-Marked silver), jewellery and seal matrices; a large collection of oil and water colour paintings, prints, drawings and photographs, furniture and treen plus guild and other items. The collection is made up of just over 600 items, 60 items of which are on long-term loan with most of the collection on permanent display to visitors.

Collection history (Collection development policy)
The Mercian Regiment Museum was originally established as the Worcestershire Regiment Museum at Norton Barracks, the Regimental Depot, in 1922. It was moved in the early 1970’s, to a self-contained gallery in the Worcester City Museum and Art Gallery in Foregate Street, Worcester, where it currently welcomes over 14,000 visitors a year. As the Worcestershire Regiment Museum it collected material from its two antecedent regiments the 29th and 36th Foot and from the Worcestershire Regiment. Following the amalgamation of the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiments in 1970 it collected material relating to the newly formed WFR. Following the amalgamation of the Cheshire Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment and the Staffordshire Regiment to form the Mercian Regiment it has collected material relating to the Mercian Regiment.

Collection overview (Collection development policy)
The Mercian Regiment Museum currently collects artefacts and documents relating to The Worcestershire Regiment and its antecedents (comprising the 29th and 36th Regiments, The Worcestershire Militia and Worcestershire Volunteers), to its successors (The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment and The Mercian Regiment) and to the adversaries on those campaigns in which these regiments have fought.
The collection of Archives contains private, regimental and business papers. The Photographic collection comprises an estimated 1500 images dating from the 1870s to the present day. The collection also embraces pictorial works of art, together with three-dimensional arts and crafts such as sculpture, ceramics and silver. The collection includes soldier-made craft objects, as well as ceramics and mess ware. The museum also holds works on paper, oil paintings, and items of silver.
The Museum’s collection of Printed Books includes holdings of regimental histories, campaign histories, biographies and other official publications.
The collection includes over 300 items of uniform and other garments dating from the early nineteenth century to the present day, In addition it holds almost 66 colours, 200 badges, and,2500 medals including 6 Victoria Crosses. The Museum’s collection of weapons covers those used by the British soldier from the Peninsula to the present day, and includes around 93 edged weapons and 96 firearms; together with items of personal equipment, musical instruments and personal records of many of those who have served in the regiments. Apart from the Militia, whose origins go back to the early medieval period, the other components were formed from 1694 and relate to Worcestershire and those places where the regiments have been based. The period of collecting therefore dates from around 1694 to the present and, in respect of The Mercian Regiment, into the future.

Collection history (Collection development policy)
When the museum was founded in 1976 the majority of items donated were bygones, farming tools and maritime items. The collection gradually expanded to include the range of artefacts held today. The vast majority were and still are donated by local people with a much smaller number purchased or bought at auction. Currently the most rapidly growing collections are in archaeology and the digital database.

Collection overview (Collection development policy)
Social History
This represents one of the core collections and includes articles of domestic, agricultural, farming and business use, mainly originating from the local area and illustrating life and industry over the last few centuries. There are also old toys and games.
Maritime History
A separate category due to the historic and current importance of the marine industries in the local economy. The collection includes artefacts relating to boat building, sail making, fishing and oystering and also covers the history of local racing yachts, sailing barges and houseboats.
Archaeology
Included in this important section are finds of pottery and other objects plus flints and stone axe heads excavated locally or dredged from the sea. There is a particular emphasis on the Roman period due to the island’s Roman occupation and proximity to the Roman garrison at Colchester. Two Roman cremation burials from Mersea are currently on an extended loan from Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service. Recent additions are timbers from a Bronze Age walkway and other artefacts found during excavations on the island. There are also remains such as pedestals and briquetage from the salt making industry in the Red Hills.
Local History with photographs, documents, maps and plans
This is becoming one of the most important and fastest-growing themes. Of particular interest are a large collection of local postcards from the early 1900s and some speculative plans for the development of Mersea as a large seaside resort. There is a growing digital archive of over 45,000 images and documents which can be viewed on the museum’s computer database, plus census returns and parish records for family history research.
Natural History and Geology
This smaller category includes rocks and fossils from local sites, particularly East Mersea, with a few interesting specimens from further afield. There is a small collection of stuffed birds and small mammals and some ancient animal bones.
Costume and Textiles
A small collection which includes women’s, children’s and babies’ clothing from Victorian times onwards, some military and other uniforms and a selection of accessories and textiles such as tapestries and samplers, most with a local connection.
Militaria
A category which includes locally recovered artefacts from the Civil War such as cannon balls and musket balls, plus items from the two World Wars including service records, medals, gas masks and helmets. Several aeroplane propellers and engines dredged from the sea are displayed outside.
Engineering
This comprises of a small collection of powered engines for domestic or commercial use. However due to a change in emphasis at the museum some of these items are now on long term loan to the Museum of Power at Langford which has better facilities to display and run them.
Art
The museum holds a small collection of art comprising original oil paintings and watercolours and some prints, mainly of local scenes or by local artists. There are two items of sculpture.

Collection history (Collection development policy)
Cyfarthfa Castle Museum & Art Gallery
Cyfarthfa Castle Museum & Art Gallery is situated within Cyfarthfa Castle, a grade I listed building built by the Crawshay family, Ironmasters of Cyfarthfa Ironworks, and as such is an important monument to the town’s industrial past. Cyfarthfa Castle Museum & Art Gallery was established in 1910 to hold in trust the historic and contemporary collections of Merthyr Tydfil and district. The museum fulfils the role of a local history museum and gallery and features a surprisingly wide and eclectic collection. Notable early collectors of ethnographic and archaeological material include Frank James, Frederick Dumayne and Harry Hartley Southey whose bequest makes up a large part of our Egyptology collections. The art collection contains work by eminent local artists such as Penry Williams and has been improved significantly by the donation of a number of contemporary paintings from CASW (Contemporary Arts Society of Wales) over a 30 year period from the 1960s – 1980s. The museum’s collection reflects the interests, pursuits, occupations and products of the people of the Borough in all their diversity. Since 1986 the museum has sought to strengthen its social, political and industrial history collections with specific relevance to the history and development of the Borough and its people and issues directly relating to its history.
Joseph Parry’s Cottage.
Prior to 1997, Joseph Parry’s Cottage was run by the Merthyr Tydfil Heritage Trust. In April 1997, the Heritage Trust relinquished its museum management role, and handed the ownership of Joseph Parry’s Cottage to Merthyr Tydfil Museums Service to run alongside Cyfarthfa Castle Museum & Art Gallery. Many of the items within Joseph Parry’s Ironworkers Cottage are on loan from Amgueddfa Cymru: National Museum Wales. There is also a small collection of objects on display at the Cottage that are from the collection held by Merthyr Tydfil Museums Service.

Collection overview (Collection development policy)
Social History
The most diverse of all the collections containing items that relate life in Merthyr Tydfil. It contains domestic and household items and also covers working life and the industrial history of Merthyr Tydfil to present. This section also covers the cultural and sporting life of the Borough and includes such items as the instruments of the Cyfarthfa Brass Band and material associated with the life of Doctor Joseph Parry. This collection contains approximately 5,500 items.
Fine Art Collection
The fine art collection, when taken to encompass all artistic mediums, forms a strong C19th and C20th collection with important local elements in the work of Penry Williams, Thomas Prytherch and G.F. Harris and artists with links to the Dowlais Educational Settlement such as Cedric Morris and Heinz Koppel. Many Welsh artists and subjects are represented but not to the exclusion of English work, especially with reference to the Newlyn School of Art. This breadth of work is invaluable for setting in context the locally important works within the group. The fine art collection falls into a multi-disciplinary role, in that many of the works have a direct relevance to the interpretation of the County Borough and its people’s history. This collection contains approximately 2,000 items.
Ceramics Collection
The porcelain collection spans European and some Eastern products. The collection includes some important examples of Swansea and Nantgarw wares and other local products. This collection contains approximately 1,500 items.
Costume
There is a heavy emphasis on Victorian female clothing and accessories in this collection. The collection also contains examples of ceremonial clothing, such as Mayoral hats and priests robes, as well as a selection of flags. There are also collections associated with Merthyr Tydfil’s sporting history including boxing and rugby items. This collection contains approximately 800 items.
Archaeology and Ethnography
This collection was largely created by a number of wealthy Merthyr Tydfil citizens who acquired items globally for their private collections. The archaeology collection largely consists of British, unprovenanced material from Merthyr Tydfil collectors. Exceptions to this are Roman material from an excavation of Penydarren Roman fort and the Cilsanws Bronze Age dagger. Collections include Greek, Roman, Persian, Asian and Oriental items, as well as a large collection of Ancient Egyptian objects. This collection contains approximately 1,700 items.
Natural History Collections
The natural history collection has been created by a small group of wealthy Merthyr Tydfil citizens, illustrating their leisure pursuits and travels, and it can be interpreted with this in mind. Similarly the geology element is formed primarily from the private collections of a number of Merthyr citizens spanning a world wide selection of samples, but linked back to Merthyr by association. The comprehensive collection of slag and coal / ironstone samples collected throughout Merthyr in the 1930’s can be seen as a vital social and industrial historic tool with great relevance to the experience of those who worked to extract and use these materials. This collection contains approximately 2,000 items.
Numismatic Collection
The Numismatic collection was trying to achieve a comprehensive range of British coinage and has resulted in a representing all major coinage but at an inferior quality. There are a few local trade tokens and locally printed notes but these are rare exceptions. There is also a small medal collection.
MSS & Printed Books
This is a small collection of a variety of bound volumes in the collection. These are largely publications to do with the iron and coal industry and various religious items. It contains approximately 50 items.
The Photographic Collection
The photographic collection is modest but expanding (around 200 prints) and is clearly focused on the Borough and any related events / persons. An important element of this work is the collection of Robert Thompson Crawshay’s photographic work. The photographic collection contains approximately 1,000 items.

Collection history (Collection development policy)
Peter Scoley, one of the founders of the museum, had a few objects himself. Other items were donated to him and his wife over time. When the 106 Squadron Association closed officially, their collections were transferred to the museum to be looked after and a resolution was passed to do this. In 2017 the museum gained accredited status and began to focus acquisitions to the collection with the introduction of a Collections Policy.

Collection history (Collection development policy)
Mid-Antrim Museum has its origins in Ballymena Borough Council’s Historical Research Initiative, launched in 1984. It was through the auspices of this Initiative that premises beside the Town Hall were opened in 1990 to display the Council’s collection of artefacts, known as ‘Morrow’s Shop’ Museum. In 1997 Ballymena Borough Council was awarded a major Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £4.414 million to develop a new purpose built museum and arts centre adjoining the Town Hall on Bridge Street. The total value of the capital project was £20 million. The Museum was then housed in temporary premises at Wellington Court, in the town centre, from May 2001, and renamed ‘Ballymena Museum’.
The Museum has been operating from the purpose built premises at The Braid: Ballymena Town Hall, Museum and Arts Centre since 2007. The Braid officially opened to the public in May 2008 with the Museum rebranded as Mid-Antrim Museum. The Braid is also the Civic headquarters of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.
The museum collection includes artefacts which illustrate the social, agricultural and industrial history of Ballymena and the surrounding hinterlands such as items from the Braid Water Mill and Phoenix Weaving Factory, along with local shops like Morrow’s and Simon McCrory’s. The collections have grown to reflect other local industries and people. The permanent ‘History’ exhibition gallery focuses on key periods and themes through a chronologically arranged narrative through collection material and a range of significant artefacts on loan from lending institutions such as National Museums Northern Ireland; The Royal Armouries and the National Museum of Ireland.
Mid Antrim museum has committed to working towards becoming dementia friendly in 2019 and has made use of collections to support this work. The museum has also supported youth engagement through the Kick the Dust project, funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund in partnership with NMNI and NIMC, as well as community engagement through tourism and heritage initiatives with community led industrial heritage sites in the Borough such as Shaped by Industry – Shared with Pride, a 2018-19 project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund to mark European Year of Culture 2018.
A process of upgrading and refreshment of galley was underway since 2018 to update projected material and content. Conservation work was undertaken on two paper artefacts on permanent display. This gallery upgrade work temporarily paused in 2020 due to Covid 19 with delivery of public programming moving online. Museum services resumed on site in June 2021.

Collection overview (Cornucopia)
Transport Collection
The Sir Frank Whittle collection provides a unique insight into the history of the inventor of the British jet engine. A further strong focus in the collections is the Coventry and Midlands aircraft industry as a whole. Aircraft such as the Sopwith Pup, Lancasters, Mosquitoes and Whitley bombers, and later Meteors and Hunters, were built in the area. Examples of many of these are shown, dominated by the last of them all, the huge Armstrong Whitworth Argosy freighter. The aircraft themselves are accompanied by smaller items of tools, machinery and equipment. The focus of the collections is Sir Frank Whittle, and many of the exhibits are related to the jet engines he developed, and to the aircraft they powered. Collection-level records
History
Some Accredited museums (or multi-site services covering a number of museums) have shared with MDS a brief history of the collections in their care. These collection histories mostly come from the museums’ collection development policies, though they are no longer a mandatory section of the policies required by the Museum Accreditation Scheme.
Collection Overview
Accredited museums (or multi-site services covering a number of museums) are required to have a collection development policy that includes a brief overview of the scope and strengths of the collections in their care. Collection overviews are an incredibly useful starting point for anyone who wants to navigate the nation’s museum holdings, and we are very grateful to all those museums that have shared their overviews with MDS. In some cases, we have included overviews from a legacy dataset called ‘Cornucopia’.
CloseObject records in MDS
This figure is the number of datasets currently in MDS, rather than the number of museums. This is because some datasets come from multi-site services. For example, Norfolk Museum Service has contributed a single dataset, but this includes records about items held in the service’s eleven branch museums. On our Object search landing page, you can see the number of Accredited museums represented in these datasets.

Accredited Museum
These museums meet the nationally-agreed standards of the UK Museum Accreditation Scheme run by Arts Council England, Museums Galleries Scotland, NI Museums Council and the Welsh Government. In the case of multi-site services, the individual branch museums are Accredited, but the overarching service is usually not. Eg Yorkshire Museums Trust is responsible for three Accredited museums, but is not itself Accredited.
Designated Collection
The Designation Scheme, run by Arts Council England, recognises cultural collections of outstanding importance held in non-national museums, libraries and archives across England. There are over 160 Designated collections, but only the museum ones are included in our database here.
Recognised Collection
The Museums Galleries Scotland Recognition Scheme includes more than fifty Recognised Collections of National Significance, some spread across more than one museum. Here we count the number of museums containing parts of those collections, which is why the figure displayed here is higher than that quoted on the MGS website. There is currently no equivalent scheme for Wales or Northern Ireland.
