Collection history (Collection development policy)
The collection was started in the 1930s by local historian Miss Lucie Bishop (1908-1984) and her aunt Alice Standen. Items of local interest were given to, or collected by, Miss Bishop over the years, and these formed the basis of the present museum when it was opened in 1974. The museum continues to collect items of local interest, and in 2006 were bequeathed a large collection of negatives from the Henfield photographer Marjorie Baker.

Collection overview (Collection development policy)
The accessioned collection contains around 11,000 objects ranging from paper items to a plough. The core collection is of objects that have some connection with Henfield and the surrounding district, or its residents. Objects include, geological and archaeological materials, costumes, paintings, photographs, household objects, farm tools, toys, oral history recordings, books, and other ephemera etc. All objects held by the museum are accessioned.
Within the costume collection the latter half of the 19th century is well represented particularly by smocks and ladies wear. There is also a selection of 20th century pieces. Some garments carry labels from historic Brighton based businesses e.g. Hannington’s, and Barrance and Ford.
