    Fine Art Collection

    Portraits. The collection consists of approximately 1200 items, including oil on canvas, watercolours, drawings, prints, sculpture. All of the collection is of either British origin or subject. The collection’s greatest strength lies in portraits (usually of civic leaders, still lives by local artists, local landscapes and topographical works. There are oil paintings by Sir Stanley Spencer, Bernard Adeney and Gerard Chowne and several paintings by William Nicholson.

    Decorative and Applied Arts Collection

    The collection consists of items either manufactured in Newark or which are commemorative pieces. The Municipal Insignia consists of items still in use for civic ceremonies. The civic plate includes items of silverware which have been donated to the town. Furniture has been donated or purchased specifically for use in the Town Hall. There are several clocks in the collection. Decorative art pieces have been received from Newark’s twin towns in Poland, Germany and France and from Newark’s of the World.

    The collection consists of a selection of mayoral robes.

    Military Collection

    The collection of military items consists mainly of photographs and plaques, which relate directly to the Freedom of the Town which both the RAF and Worcester and Sherwood Foresters (now part of the Mercia Regiment) enjoy.

    Numismatics Collection

    The collection consists of siege pieces, which were struck 1645-46, during the English Civil War.

    Photograph Collection

    Collection contains collection of photographs, of particular importance are the photographs of past mayors. The collection also includes photographs marking historic occasions such as the visits of Queen Mary and George V. There are photographs of various local teams of cricket, bowls etc.

    Archives Collection

    Local significance. The collection holds a significant number of manuscripts, maps and books, illustrating the evolution of the collection from the civic functions of the Town Council. It is the policy of Newark Town Council to deposit such items with The Nottinghamshire Archives Records Office.
