Brass badge in the form of the regimental number, ‘98’.
The 98th Infantry was a regiment originally raised in 1788 as the Salabat Khan’s Regiment in the Princely State of Hyderabad. In 1826 the unit became the 7th Regiment of the Nizam of Hyderabad’s Army. In 1854 it became the 5th Hyderabad Contigent. With the reform of the Indian Army in 1903, the regiment was renumbered the 98th Infantry. In 1922 the unit became the 4th Battalion, 19th Hyderabad Regiment.

Part of the East India Company’s Bengal Army, the 6th Bengal Native Infantry was renumbered in 1824 but its origins went back to 1763 with the raising of a 13th Battalion. In 1857, like many Bengal Army units, the regiment mutinied, killing many of their European officers at Allahabad.

The Falkland Islands Defence Force is a locally maintained volunteer defence unit, which works alongside British Army units to maintain the security of the Islands. Initially established in 1847, it was ordered to surrender a day after it was mobilised during the Falklands War (1982). Re-established after the war the Falklands Islands Defence Force now meet weekly for training and have regular weekend training exercises, often in partnership with the Regular Army.

Campaign medal awarded to Captain (later General) John Briggs, political assistant.
The Army of India Medal was approved in 1851 for issue to officers and men of the British Army and Honourable East India Company’s forces. The award was given retrospectively to survivors of various actions during the period 1799 to 1826. This included the 2nd Maratha War (1803-1805), the Gurkha War (1814-1816), the Pindaree or 3rd Maratha War (1817-1818) and the 1st Burma War (1824-1826).
Briggs received his medal for services during the 3rd Maratha War. Maheidpoor (or Mahidpore) was one of the last battles of that conflict and saw General Sir Thomas Hislop defeat the army of Indore on 23 December 1817.

Perspex with steel handles and foam arm guard.
The British Army became experienced in riot control during its service in Northern Ireland. Shields were carried as protection from thrown stones and bottles. This type of shield replaced the earlier metal types with a mesh visor; they were lighter and had greater visibility in use.
