- Experimental pattern other ranks hat, 1842 (c).
Hat, other ranks’, experimental pattern, Universal pattern, 1842 (c).
Heavily lacquered leather crown.
This experimental pattern was designed to give protection from sun and rain but because of its marked resemblance to the traditional hat worn by Welsh ladies it was not greeted with enthusiasm by the Army. It was known as the Albert hat as it was rumoured to have been designed by Prince Albert. The Albert Shako was adopted for wear by the Army in 1844 and consequentially this pattern hat ceased to be considered.
