In the election the SDLP put forward nine candidates and received 22.0% of the vote. Party leader Gerry Fitt retained the West Belfast seat but was the only successful candidate.

The poster uses the cartoon figure of Tufty the squirrel which was used in road safety campaigns to warn that unused buildings could be dangerous. 'Don't play in or near empty buildings. They could be very dangerous.'

This poster was produced in late 1986 at the time of the first anniversary of the Anglo-Irish Agreement. An anti-Agreement rally by unionists at Belfast City Hall was again attended by approximately 200,000 people but unlike the previous year was followed by violence and two nights of rioting in loyalist areas across Northern Ireland.
