- Decorated with concentric circles on upper surface. Flat strips decorated with compass-scribed dot and circle ornament, probably decorative strips from a box. Small wooden caskets decorated with plates of bone or antler are current from the late Roman to early medieval period. There are similar C12th examples from Goltho, Lincolnshire, Ludgershall Castle, Wiltshire and Exeter. Context: early to mid C13th cess pit. Illustrated in C. Drage "Nottingham Castle" Thoroton Society Transactions p115 fig 29 No.1- Animal bone.
