- Object name(s):
- Flat Iron
- Brief description:
- Irons have been in use long before the advent of electricity. To smooth textiles, a solid cast iron was warmed in front of a fire or on a stove and the resultant heat and weight of the iron would press any creases out of the fabric. This tailor’s flat iron has the maker’s mark ‘J. Platt & Co.’ on the top surface between the handle ends. The handle itself has a decorative twist that may also have provided a more effective grip for the user, once wrapped in a thick cloth or pad. For greater productivity, it would have been part of a pair of irons, with one warming up on the open fire on a stand called a trivet whilst the other was being used. It is very heavy! Circa 1816.
