- Object name(s):
- etching on paper; print; The Priest’s House, Stepcote Hill, Exeter; The Priest’s House, Stepcote Hill, Exeter
- Brief description:
- This etching is a view down the steep street of Stepcote Hill, Exeter showing some of its old houses. In the medieval period this was one of the principal routes into Exeter and so was lined with merchants’ houses. By the early 20th century these houses had become slums but were a magnet for artists, such as Frances Hayman, seeking picturesque views. By the 1930s the only building that hadn’t been demolished is the one in the centre of the scene.
Frances Marjorie Hayman was a student at the Royal Albert Memorial College of Art, Exeter around 1920-1925 and exhibited at the Exeter Art Society.

- Text:
- Photographs and photographers were present from the very beginning of the V&A's history and the Museum has an extensive collection of images from the 1850s through to the present which documents the construction and development of the V&A and the South Kensington site.
Originally collected by the National Art Library as part of a programme to record works of art, architecture and design in the interest of public education, these topographic and architectural views were valued as records and as source material for students of architecture and design. As well as being crucial records of the history of the V&A, and an important element within the National Art Library's visual encyclopaedia, these photographs are also significant artefacts in the history of the art of photography.

- Text:
- John Dibblee Crace first came to public notice through his Gothic- and Renaissance-style furniture for the International Exhibition of 1862. His clients included the 4th Marquess of Bath for whom he redocorated Longleat, and William Waldorf Astor who commissioned him to decorate Cliveden (ca. 1895).
The Crace family were the most important firm of interior decorators working in Britain in the 19th century. They worked for every British monarch from George III to Queen Victoria and on a range of buildings that includes royal palaces, Leeds Town Hall and the Great Exhibition building of 1862.
