- Object name(s):
- bird: skeleton; LARIDAE: Larus marinus Linnaeus: great black-backed gull; great black-backed gull
- Brief description:
- The great black-backed gull is one of the largest of all gulls and it has a striking and fierce demeanour. It is common around the coasts of Europe and eastern North America, where it breeds on islands, piers and other areas away from mammalian predators. It does not normally nest on buildings, unlike many other large gulls. It feeds mostly on live prey and does not scavenge at human waste as enthusiastically as other species. In breeding plumage it is a beautiful bird that often stands its ground when approached by people. This specimen came from Corbyn beach, in Torquay.
