- Text:
- This album of watercolour drawings of traditional costume was compiled by Scottish artist David Allan when he was travelling through France and Italy between 1770-1776.
However, the sixty-one watercolours are not merely records of costumes. Rather, they are small genre scenes with figures set in streets or landscapes and were painted in Rome, Florence, Naples and several other places that Allan visited on his European tour. The well-known art critic Brian Sewell, has described this album as "witty, mischievous and frankly pretty". The colours are in pristine condition and give a delightful glimpse of the lighter side of the Grand Tour.

- Title:
- Untitled
- Object name(s):
- Work on paper
- Brief description:
- This cityscape is reminiscent in style of Kovner’s New York views executed in the 2000s. In comparison to the more neatly executed oils, in this gouache, however, the shapes of the buildings are denoted with broad brushstrokes, in a much looser and free-flowing manner. Kovner’s work combines a love of landscape – both pastoral and urban – with a love of colour. American art critic Donald Kuspit observed in 2010: ‘Kovner’s impressionistic-expressionistic rendering of nature [reflects] his aesthetic love affair with nature’, describing his paintings as ‘radiant and intense with light and colour… aesthetic delights’.
