- Object name(s):
- Printing press
- Brief description:
- Hand operated-printing press, made in America in 1846. This model is known as the Columbian Press and was invented by George Clymer in 1813. This item was once in the offices of the Ilfracombe Chronicle (1855-1965). Columbian presses are known for their elaborate decoration, unfortunately the bald eagle surmounting our press lost its head around 1948 when two printing apprentices unbablanced the weight at the top of the press and the whole top section fell to the floor breaking off the eagles's head in the process. The press, however, continued to be used by the newspaper until it ceased production in 1965.
