- History of British Agriculture
- Object name(s):
- agriculture; book
- Brief description:
- History of British Agriculture - 1846-1914. This book deals first with the state of farming at the time of the Repeal of the Corn laws; it then descibes changes in farming practice through the period of prosperity and the ensuing decades when scientific discovery and technological advance gave farmers greater control over biological factors. Finally it reveals conditions of labour on the land, and the social and economic effects of the 'drift from the land'. Published by David & Charles Limited. 1971. 411 pages.

- Object name(s):
- fossil: mollusc; miscellaneous, casts of fossil gastropods and bivalves; shells
- Brief description:
- This specimen of bivalve and gastropod shell casts set in sandstone dates from the middle Devonian, approximately 416-395 million years ago. It was donated by Mr W. Vicary of Newton Abbot, Devon. The specimen was found at the stratigraphical location of the Hangman Grit Sandstone group, located in Somerset/North Devon. These sandstone grits represent ‘deltaic deposits’, formed from rivers flowing from the then extensive Welsh mountain range, over land yet to become flooded to form the Severn estuary, and into the the southern Rheic Ocean which covered much of southern Devon.

- Object name(s):
- fossil: mammal; MUSTELIDAE: Meles meles: European badger; European badger
- Brief description:
- This skull fragment of a badger was found at Levaton Cave, Buckfastleigh in Devon, and donated by W.E. Cheesman. The specimen dates to the Pleistocene 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago. Badgers are well adapted to their way of life having sharp, elongated claws on the end of short, powerful limbs allowing them to dig setts easily, although this badger was probably using the cave system as a ready-made sett. Contrary to the stereotypical solitary (and grumpy) badger popularised by Kenneth Grahame’s classic ‘Wind in the Willows’, the European badger is a highly social creature, forming groups of 6 up to a staggering 23 adults living together in a sett.

- Brief description:
- In 2015 England and Wales hosted the Rugby World Cup. Exeter was one of 13 host cities. Sandy Park stadium, home to Premiership side Exeter Chiefs, is the venue for three prestigious world cup games.
RAMM commissioned internationally renowned photographer Michelle Sank to create a visual portrait of the city and its people during the build up to this once-in-a-lifetime event. Between February and July 2015 Sank photographed the players, spectators and fans of local teams and Exeter Chiefs.
Crossing age, class and gender, Sank’s images of players, crowds and supporters capture the importance of rugby within Exeter’s communities.

- Text:
- This medieval oak paddle was probably used for propelling a small boat or currach. Originally it had a T-shaped handle, part of which is now broken.
Many shells and fish bones have been found on archaeological sites in the city.
This shows that medieval Aberdonians would have eaten lots of fish, from both the sea and from rivers.

- Railway History in Pictures
- Object name(s):
- railway; book
- Brief description:
- Railway History in Pictures - East Anglia. East Anglia has always been a sparsely populated area of England. Even by the outbreak of the second world war Norfolk had changed but little in the preceding century. What impact then must the coming of the railways have had on the essentially rural counties of Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire which comprised the area known as East Anglia? An anthology of photographs shows the scale and operation of the rail network across East Anglia, giving a visual record of its impact. Published by David & Charles. 1983. 96 pages.

- Object name(s):
- figurine; Limoge enamel crucifixion figurine; Figure of Christ
- Brief description:
- The figure of Christ from a crucifix. It was probably made in France at Limoge and dates to around 1190-1230. The traces of gilding and enamel show what a decorative object this would have been. Figures like this would have been attached to a wooden cross and might have stood in a church or personal shrine.
The fact that it was found in a field, and is quite badly damaged, suggests that it was removed with some force. In the 1500s the Reformation brought huge changes to the ways people worshipped. Some of the old Catholic symbols, including crucifixes, were no longer acceptable. It’s possible that this figure was removed or thrown out from a church at this time.
