- View of the Bark 'London'
- Object name(s):
- Painting
- Brief description:
- Watercolour by John Walters (1748-c1826) Full Inscription: 'Ilfracombe, View of the Bark London who came from St. Lucia with 150 black prisoners she was wrec'd in Raparee Cove Oct.r :1796 in attempting to save the lives 46 was unfortunately drowned. J. Walters fecit.' This painting is based on a real event that happened on the night of the 9th October 1796. HMS London (built 1764) was carrying 106 people listed as French prisoners of war and was en route to Bristol where the prisoners were to stand trial. There was a great storm that evening which caused the ship to seek shelter, but for some unkwown reason, when local pilot John Chiswell offered to escort the ship safely into the harbour the captain turned him away. The ship eventually ran aground in Rapparee Cove and broke up, causing the deaths of many of the ships passengers and between six and twelve local rescuers.
