- Object name(s):
- The Pardon of Saint Barbe, Brittany; oil on panel; painting; The Pardon of Saint Barbe, Brittany
- Brief description:
- The painting depicts a group of women in black robes with white caps (perhaps nuns) descending a staircase, other figures also scatter the scene. More precisely this represents the Pardon at Chapelle Sainte-Barbe du Faouët, in the woods outside Le Faouët, Morbihan. The location stands out as a popular site of pilgrimage, with its monumental flights of steps, built around 1700.
Garstin (1847-1926) was an Irish artist, who was closely associated with the Newlyn School. Studying on the continent, Garstin travelled around Europe, executing his landscape scenes. Influenced by Impressionism, Garstin’s style is striking through use of quick and strong brush strokes.
