- Military Medal group of eight of Private John Elliot Bowman, Royal Army Service Corps and ‘L’ Detachment Special Air Service. Medal group consists of Military Medal, General Service Medal with Palestine clasp, 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star with 8th Army clasp, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal and British War Medal. Pte Bowman was born in 1918 and joined the Royal Army Service Corps in 1937. He served with the 8th Army in Africa during the Second World War. At some point in his service he was taken prisoner and interned in an Italian Prisoner of War camp. The Italians signed an Armistice with the Allies in 1943 and this left the situation confused for those held as prisoners of war. The Germans took over the camp where Bowman was interned and he was awarded the Military Medal for his efforts to escape. Bowman was discharges in 1946.
