Brief description:
This commemorative piece was made by the Barnstaple firm of Brannam’s for the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 1977 and also celebrates the first year of the Torquay Pottery Collector’s Society. Brannam’s Pottery had great success with Art Pottery in the years 1880-1900 and the RAMM collection includes many fine examples of Barum Ware. By the time this mug was made in the mid 1970s, the pottery was making more commercial pieces and some for special occasions such as this mug. The Torquay Pottery Collectors Society was founded in 1976 by Ian Green. It aims are ‘to raise the profile and the collecting of the magnificent pots produced by the Torquay and South Devon potters in the second half of the 19th Century through to the late 20th century’. The bold motif in the reverse is known as ‘Scandy’ pattern. It was designed at Aller Vale Pottery and became their trademark pattern for mottoware from around 1900. This object is not on display.
