- Object name(s):
- German Mauser C96 1896-1937. Identified as Red 9 Conversion.
- Brief description:
- This example is a 'Red 9' (indicated by red no.9 on grip) which denoted a conversion from 7.63mm to 9mm (luger) for German military use during WWI. German Mauser C96 9mm pistol Wooden butt. The 7.63mm Mauser C96 introduced in 1896 was the first semi automatic pistol taken into military service. This is an example of the 9mm version adopted by the German army in 1917 recognised by the large number 9 engraved and painted red on the grips. It is recoil operated with a sliding barrel which moves to the rear to unlock the breech. The magazine held 10 rounds fed by stripper clip. Post war versions had shorter barrels with an overall length of 10 inches and in 1932 a fully automatic version with 30 round magazine was produced which proved popular in China. Interestingly in the late 1890s fully automatic prototypes were experimented with but the trials of this first true submachine gun were abandoned due to difficulties in handling.
