Person's biographical note:
Painter and printmaker. Studied at Harrow School of Art, 1940-46, and at the Royal College of Art, 1948-51. Taught at St Albans School of Art, Manchester College of Art, 1962-70, and as Professor of Painting at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1981-86. He was elected Keeper of the Royal Academy, a post he held between 1986 and 1995. He completed numerous commissions, particularly murals for churches and painted many semi-abstract landscapes
