Object name(s):
Prisoner of War Loin Cloth
Brief description:
This intriguing piece of material was used as a loin cloth, known as a ‘fundoshi’ in Japan. It was the only garment worn by Arthur Newcombe, a Newton Abbot gentleman, after he was captured in Singapore by the Japanese army during the Second World War. Sent to Burma (now Myanmar), he was employed in the camp’s drawing office, working on plans for the railway and bridges, as he had formerly been training to become an architect. Had he been building them he may well have not lived to tell the tale. Made by Mr Newcombe himself from a mosquito net, the fundoshi is a sobering reminder of the horrific conditions endured by many prisoners of war
