- Brief description:
- Pennant for 426 Durham Coast Regiment (RA) TA. This regement formed on reactivation of coast batteries in 1947 manned Hartlepools defences. This pennant is said to have been in Lt. Col. Robsons posessions but can not have been his property as he died in 1938. 426 Durham Coast Regiment RA (TA) formed as four batteries in 1947 on the batteries reopening. They manned Heugh Battery from this time until the batteries closed in 1956. P Battery 9.2 inch guns at Pasley Battery Coatham Q Battery 6 inch guns R Battery 6 inch guns S Battery 6 inch guns Recruitment was poor at first with an establishment of 7 officers and 47 other ranks. A recruitment drive in the town only brought another 14 enlistments. Fortunately the numbers did rise over the years but by 1954 the gunners were virtually overwhelmed by National Servicemen who had been sent to the batteries for initial training from 1952. Notable dates are 1949 Dover summer camp. "The Royal Artiller Pennant to 426 Batt, was amongst Major Robson's belongings which I purchased a few years ago" - signed Alan Plewes 01/04/2003
