Object name(s):
Carnival Costume
Brief description:
Elaborate gold jewelled jacket and shoulder piece from the carnival costume ‘Mandarin from the Golden Temple’. Eric Splatt, who made this costume by hand, could be seen parading around the town sporting this incredible outfit during Newton Abbot carnival. A similarly elaborate robe was worn underneath the jacket with a large, gold, tiered headdress imitating the shape of a Chinese temple completing the look.The costume is decorated with coloured glass beads adding to the ornate appearance. Eric was a rather spectacular sight in this costume and is fondly remembered around the town.
