- Comments:
- Eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (1841-1910, later Edward VII) was initiated into freemasonry in a lodge in Stockholm by King Oscar II of Sweden and Norway in 1868. The first English lodge he joined was Royal Alpha Lodge, No. 16 in 1870, serving as Worshipful Master in 1871-2, 1877 and 1882-1886. He went on to join Union Lodge, No. 52, Prince of Wales Lodge, No. 259 and Grand Master’s Lodge, No. 1. He was the Founding Master of Navy Lodge, No. 2612, Household Brigade Lodge, No. 2614 and Sancta Maria Lodge, No. 2682. He was also an honorary member of many lodges such as Savage Club Lodge, No. 2190. He was invested as Past Grand Master in 1869 before being installed as Grand Master in 1875. He was installed as First Grand Principal of the Royal Arch by virtue of his completing the 10 degrees of the Swedish rite in 1968, because there is no record of his membership of a Royal Arch chapter. He held both positions until he became King in 1910, a reigning monarch being unable to serve as Grand Master or First Grand Principal concurrently. He was declared instead Protector of the Craft in England, Ireland and Scotland.
