- Kern, a portraitist and painter of genre in oils, was born in Liptouviar in Hungary, but lived and worked later in his life in Vienna. Influenced by seventeenth-century Dutch genre paintings, which enjoyed popularity in Germany and Austria during the nineteenth ceutnry, he concentrated on reproducing their main elements in his own work.
