Comments:
The Great Seal of the State of West Virginia depicts two male figures representing agriculture and industry - a farmer and a miner - with appropriate tools. They rest on a tombstone carved with the date June 20, 1863, the date which West Virginia became a state. Below the tombstone are crossed rifles and a cap of liberty, representing the role played by West Virginia in the American War of Independence (1775–1783) and the American Civil War (1861-1865). The Latin motto of the state, 'Montani Semper Liberi', translates as 'Mountaineers are always free'.
