- Brief description:
- A framed page of newspaper, plans and photos compiled under the heading of 'Opening of Rugby Free Library February 7th 1891'. The article discusses the opening ceremony with speeches by Rev C. Elsee (the first library chairman), Mr R.H Wood (Benefactor) and Dr Percival. It mentions some cases of birds from Newbold Revel and a Wenham Gas lamp which was presented by James Kenning. It states that the building was previously a school run by Rev T.L Bloxam, brother of Matthew. It had a small swimming baths and a fives court at the rear of the building. The three images are of the late R.H Wood, the late Rev C. Elsee and Mr W.I Tait, secretary of the first Rugby Institute (these obviously post date the article). One plan shows the building in 1890 when a school, the second shows the alterations made in 1905 and the third shows the alterations made in 1915.
