- Brief description:
- Silver National Service League Medal, 1905-1921 The National Service League was a pressure group established after the Boer War in response to the challenges faced by the Army during that conflict. It argued that all able bodied men should have some between 2 months and 4 years basic military training in order to be able to provide home defence in the case of an invasion. As time progressed the invasion postulated was that of the German Army. The League had a number of important military figures as members including Lord Raglan, Lord Roberts and Sir Garnet Wolsley. It also had a number of politicians as memebers, these were mostly Conservative but there were some Liberal MPs too. The League’s plans were not those introduced in 1916 when conscription was adopted for the First World War.
