Brief description:
Woollen embroidery on part of army shirt, 1945 (c). This embroidery was made by Charles Edward Stannard of the Essex Regiment, 3rd Indian Division. Many soldiers took up needle craft as a pastime during army service, and often became very accomplished. Soldiers took great pride in embroidery work, which was often shown in military or industrial exhibitions and displays. This beautiful example is embroidered ‘V DAY INDIA 1945’ at the bottom.
