Brief description:
Elephant goad (ankus), 1802 (c). Indian armies used elephants for centuries. The armies of the East India Company adopted this practice, and elephants were particularly useful for moving heavy artillery. The mahout (driver) would use the goad for steering and controlling the elephant.
