Plaque for the centrepiece commissioned and purchased by Sir Daniel Gooch. Inscription reads, "Presented to Alex Howden & Co Ltd by the Great Western Railway Company December 1946. The three figures represent Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Robert Stephenson and Joseph Locke, eminent railway engineers of the early 19th century".
