Title:
Girl with Lovebirds
Object name(s):
oil
Brief description:
Everyday life subject. This painting uses a time-honoured code to express an idea about the emergence of female sexuality. The young subject, who seems to be around twelve to fourteen years old, is holding one lovebird, and watching it interact with another, an amused look on her face. The birds, separated by a short distance, coo at eachother, clearly longing to be together again. While this play between the birds appears to be a facinating lesson about love and longing for the young girl, the artist drops further clues about her developing interest in such matters. Most obvious is the rose bud pinned to her clothes.
