Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, was the ninth Chancellor of the University of London, 1955-1980. The University had awarded her an honorary degree in 1937. This is one of two portraits of her in the University of London art collection; her gown as Chancellor is also on display. Portrait signed and dated LXIII to lower right. Framed. Annigoni became known in England through an exhibition in 1950 at Wildenstein & Co., London. He is best known for his portraits of Queen Elizabeth II; other sitters have included Pope John XXIII, and President John F. Kennedy. Annigoni based his style on Renaissance artists, Leonardo da Vinci and Titian, working in tempera and oil to simulate old-master oils, or pen-and-ink to imitate silverpoint.
