Brief description:
Coiled fibre plate made by the Hausa, query from Gombe, North Nigeria, and traded widely throughout Nigeria, used as food plates and to display market goods, Hausaland, possibly Zaria town. The plate is constructed from coiled and dyed palm fibres that have been wrapped around coiled palm ribs. Each turn of the coiled palm fibres is secured by binding or stitching it to the previous one. The plate is highly decorative and combines the use three different colours, cream, dark brown, and orange/red in order to create contrasting patterns. The pattern consists of an orange/red centre which is bordered by a single row of dark brown, a single row of cream and a further row of dark brown. Extending outwards from this feature is a fourteen pointed star-shape woven using alternating and contrasting colours. Each arm is outlined by three alternating rows of cream and dark brown. The triangular-shaped motifs between each point are woven in alternating and contrasting colours with nested triangular-motifs delineated within each shape using a contrasting colour to the ground. The triangular patterns are echoed and reflected around the rim of the plate. The central pattern is bordered by a double row of dark brown and a double row of cream. The rim is woven using alternating bands of dark brown and orange/red.
