Comments:
King Canute reigned as a successful King of England from 1016 until his death in 1035. The ribbon device on this jewel portrays the famous legend of Canute trying - and failing - to command back the waves of the ocean, in order to disprove a tiresome flatterer who claimed Canute was so powerful he could command the forced of nature. The sandpipers depicted on the jewel were, according to legend, Canute's favourite food.
