Comments:
Robert Freke Gould (1836-1915) was a renowned freemason who founded the Quatuor Coronati Lodge, No. 2076, London. He also published several papers on freemasonry in addition to the much celebrated 'History of Freemasonry' (1883-1887). On 8th December 1855 Gould was initiated into freemasonry. This medal commemorates Gould's fifty years as a freemason.
Comments:
The German text 'HAMBURGISCHE ZIRKEL CORRESPONDENZ' translates as 'THE HAMBURG CIRCLE CORRESPONDENCE'. It was a masonic society based in Hamburg, Germany, which funded and published works on masonic history and objects.
Comments:
As most items are manufactured in the same year they are presented, date of manufacture for this medal is taken to be the same as its presentation date. Please note this manufacture date is speculative as occasionally items are manufactured before or even after the date of presentation.
Comments:
The cataloguing of the medal collection at the Library and Museum of Freemasonry was supported by a grant from Arts Council England in 2013.
