Title:
Hackney Workhouse pewter bowl
Object name(s):
Bowl
Brief description:
This pewter bowl was used in the Hackney Workhouse, where people who were unable to support themselves could work in exchange for food and a bed. Supported by the local parish, authorities tried to keep the cost of running the workhouse low, and were slow to upgrade facilities. In a report on Hackney Workhouse in 1866, the pewter plates are described as "old and repulsive" . A female resident of the workhouse remembers pewter utensils still in use between 1910 - c.1920, before being gradually exchanged for white enamel.
