Object name(s):
fossil: mammal; HYAENIDAE: Crocuta crocuta spelaea: cave hyena; cave hyena
Brief description:
A fragment of a cave hyena jaw with in-situ teeth found in an area of Kents Cavern. The presence of teeth in this fossil allow reliable diet analyses to be conducted to help find out what this hyena was preying on. Bones of other animals from the caves also show tooth marks made by the hyenas gnawing them. The hyena was probably using the cave as a den in which to live. This object is on display at RAMM in the Down to Earth gallery.
