Person's biographical note:
Ceramicist. Born in Scotland where he has lived and worked for most of his life, he trained as an apprentice potter for three years and set up his first studio in 1973. Later he studied at Edinburgh College of Art between 1978 and 1983. On completion of his studies he started teaching and is now Head of the Department of Ceramics at Glasgow School of Art. The Glasgow School of Art building was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the overall concept and mix between fine art and craft are an inspiration to him. His abstract designs are based on his memories of the Galloway landscape in Scotland. He no longer throws, but prefers to hand build his pots which are richly decorated with strong coloured glazes and gold lustre to give a sumptuous finish to the pieces. Archie McCall demonstrated at the International Ceramics Festival, Aberystwyth in 1989 when the piece in the collection was purchased. He has lectured widely overseas and is a member of the Craftsmen Potters Association
