This wool serge battle dress was worn by Field Marshal Sir Claude Auchinleck, Commander in Chief in India from June 1943 to August 1947. Auchinleck was appointed to the rank of field marshal in June 1946 and during this period helped prepare the future Indian and Pakistani armies prior to Partition, which was scheduled for August 1947.

Army Gold Medals were awarded to officers of the rank of major or above for participating in one or more battles in the Peninsular War (1808-1814). This medal bears the seated figure of Britannia on the obverse and the battle honour ‘Vittoria’ within a laurel wreath on the reverse. Attached top the ribbon is a clasp with the battle honour, ‘Pyrenees’.

Large rectangular flag, top half in red and bottom half in beech green. The badge in the centre comprises a yellow circlet, edged in black, bearing the college title in black, surmounted by a monarchial crown and a scroll with the motto, ‘In Scientia Fortuna’, below. In the centre is a red and black ladybird on a white background.
The Women’s Royal Army Corps College in Camberley trained female officers at a time when women were not accepted at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS). Women were able to attend Sandhurst for their officer training from 1984.

The notes were made by Shoeing Smith William Edward Adams, 39th Field Battery, Royal Artillery, Woolwich (later Farrier Sergeant in The Lancashire Fusiliers) and cover the anatomy and illness of horses, besides details on shoeing and the treatment of wounds and injuries, including a list of drugs employed.

Silver and gilt clasp with Queen Victoria’s cypher surmounted by a crown within a circlet inscribed with the unit title, ‘Madras Staff Corps’.
The Madras Army was the army of the Madras Presidency, one of the three presidencies that made up the East India Company. After the Indian Mutiny of 1857 the presidencies and their armies came under the direct authority of the British Crown. From 1861 each army had its own staff corps created to provide and place officers in military, civil and political posts. In 1903 the presidency armies were merged into the British Indian Army with the separate staff corps amalgamated into the Indian Staff Corps.
