- Brief description:
- Humorous prose by Betty Mould, Queen Mary’s Army Auxiliary Corps.
Her story tells of how ‘Bandy’, being fed up with Army life and wishing to go home, fools the Army Board into letting him go back to ‘Blighty’.
The word ‘blighty’ is a slang term for Great Britain. The word derives from an Urdu word meaning ‘foreign’, and was used in India in the 1800s as a term for an English or British visitor. It was used by British soldiers in South Africa during the Boer War (1899-1902) in reference to their homeland. Its use amongst troops continued during World War One (1914-1918). To ‘catch a blighty one’ was slang for receiving a non-fatal wound that would result in evacuation home.
From a collection of papers of Betty Mould MBE (1895-1988), Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps and Queen Mary’s Army Auxiliary Corps, 1909-1981.

- ‘A Corner in Abbeville’, by A Gebbett, Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, 1918 (c).
There is a Camp in Abbeville,
Lit with electric light,
Where each dutiful W.A.A.C. girl
Creeps in late at night.
Second gong has been ringing,
Maiden feels she could swear,
Orderly, bouncing, grinning,
Standing with death warrant there.
There are some Non-Com. in Abbeville,
Each with a golden stripe;
Not all tarred with the same brush,
Some of superior type
Split on dear little W.A.A.C. girls
Who winning officers meet,
Who cigarettes smoke in cafes,
Or taste red wine or sweet.

- Brief description:
- Herforder Pils box, 1995.
Drinking has always been a part of service in the Army, and service in Germany for British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) soldiers involved sampling the local beers. While there are debates about which was the best, Herforder Pils became a favourite, particularly amongst British Army personnel of the 1st Armoured Division based in and around the town of Herford.
The Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes (NAAFI) also had a storage and distribution facility in the town, which meant Herforder Pils was sold across the British garrisons and stations. While the newer carrying box holds eight beers, the original box held ten bottles and was nicknamed the ‘yellow handbag’ by soldiers.

- Formation badge, Headquarters 21st Army Group, 1943 (c).
Shield-shaped, cloth badge with yellow crossed swords on a blue cross on a red ground.
21st Army Group was the primary British war fighting organisation in Northwest Europe in the closing stages of the Second World War. It was established in London during July 1943 under the command of General Bernard Paget, but General Bernard Montgomery took command in December 1943. From there, he led 21st Army Group in Northern France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany from June 1944 until August 1945, when it was renamed the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR). BAOR retained the crossed swords for its emblem.
The main fighting components of 21st Army Group were the British Second Army and the First Canadian Army. At its peak, there were more than 1 million soldiers under its command. At various times during its existence, the 21st Army Group had additional British, Canadian, American and Polish field armies or corps attached to it, and smaller contingents of Dutch, Czech, Belgian and Luxembourg soldiers.
