- Identity tag belonging to Dame Helen Gwynne-Vaughan, Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, 1917 (c). Circular identification tag, pierced with one hole and inscribed, ‘H.C.I GWYNNE VAUGHAN / WAAC / CE’. Dame Helen Gwynne-Vaughan (1879-1967) was Chief-Controller of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) from 1917 to 1918, Commandant of the Women’s Royal Air Force from 1918 to 1919 and Chief-Controller of the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) from 1939 to 1941. Although those in the WAAC were still classified as civilian volunteers they were serving with the British Army and, as such, were issued ID tags just like the men. This was the first time ID tags were issued to women.
