Title:: On a Journey

Brief description:: An old man seated in a train carriage is interrupted in his reverie by our arrival with its hope that the boredom of a long journey will be alleviated. The painting is a character study of a uniquely modern experience, train travel, for which the model was Mancini’s father, Paolo, formerly a tailor in Naples. In the years around 1900 he lived with his son in Rome, overseeing his precarious mental health and frequently posing for him. The intensely worked surface of the painting, especially in subsidiary areas like the man’s clothing, makes the painting somewhat difficult to read, but such effects were much admired by contemporary collectors. One was his London patroness Mary Hunter, who arranged to show the painting at the Royal Academy in 1904, bestowing on it the French title En voyage. It came to the National Gallery with the Hugh Lane Bequest of 1917.

Title:: Portrait of a Lady

Brief description:: The sitter for this portrait by the Spanish artist Raimundo de Madrazo has not yet been identified, but her clothes can be dated to the late 1880s or early 1890s. As the clothing is unfinished, this may be a study for a larger portrait.Born in Rome in 1841 into a family of artists of noble descent, Madrazo initially studied in Madrid. In 1860 he visited Paris, where he settled permanently from 1862. He continued his training there, which included studying with Léon Cogniet. Madrazo was also influenced by the Belgian painter Alfred Stevens, who was by then an extremely successful portraitist, particularly of elegantly dressed society women.Despite its possible unfinished state this portrait shows Madrazo’s polished technique, which established him as a much sought-after portrait painter both in France and America, where his clients included the Vanderbilt family. His brother-in-law was another important Spanish artist, Mariano Fortuny.

Brief description:: Forain worked as an etcher and lithographer, as well as a painter, acquiring a reputation for his satirical, and often biting, scenes of Parisian life. A friend of Manet and Degas, he participated in some of the Impressionists’ exhibitions from 1879 to 1886. His later paintings were mainly scenes from the law courts and of the ballet.In his law court paintings, Forain’s sympathies lie with ordinary people, who are trapped within a complex and impersonal legal system. Although these scenes are in the tradition of Daumier, Forain avoids obvious caricature (for example, of lawyers and judges) and focuses instead on specific, and often mundane, situations and exchanges. Here, a poor man, accompanied by a little girl and carrying a young child in his arms, hands a paper to his counsel. Forain effectively uses gesture, pose and expression to convey the man’s situation.The painting was owned by Henri Rouart, whose daughter Hélène was the sitter for Degas's Hélène Rouart in her Father's Study.

Title:: Messengers

Brief description:: 'Messengers' is a large-scale wall painting by Bridget Riley: one of the most important artists of her generation. The title, ‘Messengers’, is inspired by a phrase Constable used when referring to clouds, and might also be an allusion to the numerous angels, bearers of news, that we see in the skies of so many National Gallery pictures. Painted directly onto the wall of the Annenberg Court and spanning a vast 10 x 20 metres, the abstract work, comprised of coloured discs, carries influences from our historic collection over into the 21st century. Throughout art history, harmonies of colour have played a large part in pictorial composition.Taking as a point of departure the paintings of George Seurat, in particular Bathers at Asnières, Bridget Riley’s 'Messengers' transforms the Annenberg Court into a great white space in which coloured discs float as clouds drift in the lanes of the sky. By leaving after-images on the viewer's retina that suggest volume and movement the longer it is perceived, the work, which was revealed in January 2019, becomes a tribute to its artistic predecessors and to the process of looking at art itself. Bridget Riley (born 1931) has a long-standing relationship with the Gallery; she made copies of paintings in the collection including Jan van Eyck’s Portrait of a Man (Self Portrait?), 1433, as a teenager as part of her portfolio when applying to Goldsmiths College, London, just after the end of the Second World War, and Georges Seurat's Bathers at Asnières while training as an artist. In 1989 Riley was invited to select that year’s 'Artist’s Eye' exhibition and between 2010 and 2011 the Gallery held her acclaimed exhibition 'Bridget Riley: Paintings and Related Work'.

Title:: Self Portrait at the Age of about Nineteen

Brief description:: William Boxall (1800--1879) painted this self-portrait when he was around 19 and about to enter the Royal Academy Schools to train as a painter. He gave it to his sister Anne. The head is rather less than three-quarters life-size. The picture may have been made as a preparatory study for the life-sized self portrait painted at about the same time, which was hanging in Boxall's house when he died.Among Boxall's closest friends were Sir Charles Eastlake, the first Director of the National Gallery from 1855 to 1865, and Lady Eastlake, whose portrait Boxall painted in 1854. Boxall accompanied them on picture-hunting tours in Italy.On 9 February 1866 Queen Victoria approved Boxall's appointment as the second Director of the National Gallery. He exhibited no further work after this but proved to be an able Director, purchasing Michelangelo's Entombment and his Madonna and Child with Saint John and Angels for the Gallery. He was knighted in 1871 and died on 6 December 1879.

Title:: Victory

Brief description:: This Victory is the work of the British neoclassical sculptor, Edward Hodges Baily, as are its pair and another six female figures, which all adorn the façade of the National Gallery.In 1826, Baily received a large order for sculpture, including four statues of ‘Victories’, for Marble Arch, which was to be erected in celebration of Britain’s defeat of the French in the Napoleonic Wars. Although Baily completed his commission, not all of his work was used as originally intended; some parts ended up adorning other government buildings. During the construction of the National Gallery, its architect, William Wilkins, was forced, in a cost-cutting exercise, to recycle masonry and statuary from other projects. This explains the presence above the Gallery's central portico of this statue personifying Victory and its pair, either side of Charles Rossi’s relief depicting Asia and Europe, even though all three pieces were initially created for the Marble Arch commission.

Brief description:: In 1876 after three years in Paris, Repin returned to his birthplace of Chuguyev in the Ukraine, where he painted a number of peasant portraits and everyday subjects. A famous example of the former is his 'Peasant with the Evil Eye' of 1877 (Moscow, Tretyakov Gallery). This study probably formed part of the same series.

Title:: A Peasant Woman

Brief description:: In this pensive study, a woman is dressed in traditional Italian costume. Her distinctive headdress is a tovaglia, a piece of folded linen or other cloth worn flat on the head and covering the neck. With increased Italian migration to France from the middle of the nineteenth century, the subject of women wearing picturesque dress became popular among French artists, Corot included.Although this painting entered the National Gallery's collection as a work by Corot himself, it is now thought to be by an imitator. The restrained colours and thin application of paint contrast with Corot’s juxtapositions of bright colour in his own late portrayals of women. This work probably dates from the early years of the twentieth century, a period when the appeal of Corot’s late silvery landscapes was on the wane, and the demand for his late figure paintings was on the rise.

Title:: Portrait of a Man

Brief description:: This portrait was bequeathed to the National Gallery in 1837. Time hasn't been kind to it. Painted in oil on an oak panel, the background in particular seems to have suffered damage or been painted over at some point.We don't know who the sitter is or who painted the picture, but is thought perhaps to be a copy of a portrait by an Amsterdam artist of about 1640. The man's costume and hairstyle -- the lace falling collar, long curls, moustache and tuft of beard beneath his chin -- were in fashion at about this time. His fleshy face and direct gaze also suggest he is a man of some standing in his community.

In the background two wagons are fully loaded with hay, and a dog perches on top of the one in the centre. The skyline of a village is shown in the distance.Monticelli made a number of paintings of peasants at work in the fields, both in his native Provence and elsewhere in France. After spending several years in Paris, he returned to Provence in 1871, where he seems to have rediscovered a deep interest in landscape. The Hayfield may have been painted around this moment, but it is not known where this particular harvest scene is set.The painting was acquired through the Sir Hugh Lane Bequest in 1917, which is currently on long-term loan to Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane.

Title:: The Mantelpiece (La Cheminée)

Brief description:: This picture -- a combination of interior scene and still-life painting -- shows Vuillard's room at Château-Rouge in Amfreville, Normandy. His friends Jos and Lucy Hessel rented the house for the summers of 1905, 1906 and 1907.A posy of wild flowers on the marble mantelpiece sits alongside a number of bottles, artworks tucked behind them. Another picture hangs on the wall, far above the painting rags that are hanging up to dry. The richly decorated walls compete with the still-life arrangement on the mantelpiece. Despite this interplay between the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional, the foreshortened mantelpiece, which appears to jut out of the picture, marks the artist's move to a more naturalistic approach.On the reverse of the painting there is a rapid sketch of three figures -- a woman and two children -- on a beach. The woman crouches down to pet one of the two dogs sat beside her.

Brief description:: This small oil painting is typical of the still lifes which, together with scenes of everyday life, form the core of Bonvin's art. His still lifes often include objects associated with a particular profession. The two coins and what might be a ledger book suggest bookkeeping is the profession here. Inkwells, quill pens, books and papers all appear in the pictures of schoolboys, often working at their desks, which Bonvin painted between 1873 and 1879 (the period when this picture was painted), but the spectacles imply an adult is using the items we see here.Bonvin’s paintings recall those of Chardin in the previous century, but also show his familiarity with seventeenth-century Dutch and Spanish painting. This picture is unusual as it is painted on zinc, but the carefully modulated lighting and subtle use of warm complementary colours are characteristic of Bonvin.

Brief description:: Fantin-Latour painted a number of self portraits in the years 1854-61 which were characterised by having summary backgrounds or no settings at all. In this example, one edge of an unframed painting is visible on the right, which has been tentatively identified as the portrait of Fantin-Latour's sister Marie (Birmingham City Art Gallery), which was rejected by the jury of the 1859 Salon.

Title:: Torchlight Procession

Brief description:: Monticelli painted many imaginary scenes of costumed figures throughout his career. Here, a dozen characters are shown in colourful outfits, probably during a torchlight procession. The central figure in white appears to be dressed as Pulcinella, a character from Commedia dell'Arte plays. This subject was also used by Antoine Watteau, whom Monticelli greatly admired.Nevertheless, the authenticity of this painting has been doubted. Analysis carried out by National Gallery conservators has revealed that its technique imitates Monticelli's, while the picture is painted on pine and not on mahogany, which is the wood that Monticelli generally used. For these reasons, it is thought to have been painted by an imitator in the 1870s. Monticelli was admired by his contemporaries, and many of his companion artists were keen to emulate his style and technique.
