- Object name(s):
- cup; two handled cup commemorating the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, 1977; two handled cup commemorating the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, 1977
- Brief description:
- This commemorative piece was made by the Barnstaple firm of Brannam’s for the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 1977 and also celebrates the first year of the Torquay Pottery Collector’s Society. Brannam’s Pottery had great success with Art Pottery in the years 1880-1900 and the RAMM collection includes many fine examples of Barum Ware. By the time this mug was made in the mid 1970s, the pottery was making more commercial pieces and some for special occasions such as this mug.
The Torquay Pottery Collectors Society was founded in 1976 by Ian Green. It aims are ‘to raise the profile and the collecting of the magnificent pots produced by the Torquay and South Devon potters in the second half of the 19th Century through to the late 20th century’.
The bold motif in the reverse is known as ‘Scandy’ pattern. It was designed at Aller Vale Pottery and became their trademark pattern for mottoware from around 1900.

- Text:
- This terracotta (baked clay) bust is not one of the known busts made for sale by Watcombe at Torquay, Devon, in south-west England, and may therefore have been a trial piece. It is based on a much admired marble statue of St Susanna in the church of S. Maria di Loreto, Rome, carved in the late 1620s by François Du Quesnoy. Stamped on the band beneath this bust is 'CARITAS' (Charity). François Duquesnoy (c. 1594-1643) was a Netherlandish sculptor who spent most of working life in Rome and assimilated the classical style. His tender and sensuous reliefs of cupids, satyrs and small children were highly influential.
Watcombe Terra-cotta Clay Company Ltd. was founded in 1869 (and continued business until 1883) by George Allen at St Mary's Church, Torquay, Devon. It capitalised on the rich deposits of red clay found whilst builders were excavating the foundations for Watcombe House. Christopher Dresser has been linked with the firm, for its products show similarities to Dresser's designs and sometimes carry ornament derived from his published works. The south Devon pottery industry grew rapidly during the latter part of the nineteenth century following the discovery of fine terra cotta clay at Watcombe in 1865.
Charity (lat. Caritas), literally means 'love', love in the sense of lovingness and kindness towards all others and is the foremost of the virtues. Charity is often represented with a flame, often coming out of some kind of vase, or she holds a candle. Often she is suckling to infants, or she is surrounded by three to four infants, one usually at the breast.

- Object name(s):
- vase; three handled vase; three handled vase
- Brief description:
- This vase was created between 1910 and 1920 at Longpark Pottery.
The pottery can be traced back to 1883, when the Longpark Pottery Terra Cotta China Works was established in Newton Road, Torquay. Production was centred on terracotta items. In 1903 the pottery was taken over by a group from the local Aller Vale Pottery. Dissatisfied with conditions at Aller Vale, the group formed their own partnership and purchased Longpark. Longpark Pottery Company Limited registered in 1905. The potters produced decorative glazed pottery, similar to the works made at Aller Vale.
This earthenware vase was decorated with cream, green and yellow slips, added on top of a dark green ground to form a daffodil design. It features three loop handles. The maker’s mark ‘LONGPARK / TORQUAY’ was printed under the base.
