- Object name(s):
- Bellarmine jug
- Brief description:
- This pottery fragment was once part of a
Bellarmine jug – thought to be named after the
Italian Cardinal, Roberto Bellarmino, who was
a fierce opponent of Protestantism in the early
1600s – and is over 400 years old!
Distinctive for their depictions of bearded faces
(possibly based upon the mythical wild man from
northern European folklore) these stoneware jugs
were salt glazed, giving them a pitted appearance.
Bellarmine jugs were originally made in western
Germany and were popular across northern
Europe. This fragment was excavated in Halcyon
Road and donated to the museum in 1997.

- Object name(s):
- Victorian Dress
- Brief description:
- All we know about this shimmering, late Victorian silk brocade bodice and skirt, is that it was worn when the owner was invited to Buckingham Palace! The fan-tail at the back must have trailed elegantly behind the wearer as they swooped into the rooms of the Royal Palace. Certainly an outfit to be seen in, the fabric has lost none of its vibrancy over the years with the beautiful embroidered floral pattern still bursting with life. As the notorious wit Oscar Wilde wrote in his 1885 essay on fashion, A Philosophy on Dress, “A good colour always gives one pleasure."

- Ball Clay Barge Model
- Brief description:
- Handmade wooden 1/36 scale model of a Teign clay barge boat. Flat-bottomed with single mast, furled square sail, rudder, two poles, and a stack of clay bricks. This model, carefully constructed by Tony Hodgkiss, depicts the boat Two Brothers. The full-size version was built in Brixham in 1924 and was about 50ft long and provided an important link between the Stover Canal and the tidal docks at Teignmouth. The model is loaded with clay, which was transported in blocks. Other cargoes included granite and gravel. The remains of Two Brothers can be seen at low tide at Arch Brook on the Teign Estuary.

- Object name(s):
- Brass Microscope
- Brief description:
- This Victorian instrument has lenses of various strengths to see very small items, including feathers, seed fragments and even a flea! Tiny tools helped the owner create new slides for his collection. It was donated by Mr Scawen who worked in Bibbings the Chemist (now the Pharmacy Café) before setting up his own shop in Highweek Street. John Bibbings opened a pharmacy in Queen Street in 1877. The shop front still has the two tall bow windows of plate glass. The ‘drugs run’ within the mahogany cabinets consists of 117 small drawers. The labels record in pharmaceutical Latin the names of drugs commonly used at that time.

- Object name(s):
- Elizabeth Manuscript
- Brief description:
- Handwritten on parchment, this document is typical of the era: paper did not start to appear in Western Europe until the 1500s, and was not commonly used until the end of the century. Parchment, normally made from sheep or cow skin, is stretched over a frame and treated until a smooth surface is created. If you look closely, hair follicles are faintly visible on this example. Only certain members of society were able to read and write in early-modern England, with literacy levels at around 20% for men in the 16th century. This document was likely written by a clerk, and probably tracks legal proceedings
